Black Buttons: Choosing the Right Finish for Your Fabric and Yarn

Black Buttons: Choosing the Right Finish for Your Fabric and Yarn

Sometimes choosing the buttons takes longer than choosing the fabric! Even when you know you want black, there are still different shapes, textures and finishes to consider.

For our first colour story, we’re looking at black buttons and how they can work with your knitting, sewing and crafts—from a favourite cardigan needing replacements to a jacket you’re making from scratch.

Matching black with black

A black button on black fabric can give a subtle finish, allowing the shape of the garment or the texture of the yarn to take centre stage.

But blacks don’t always match exactly. Some have a cooler appearance, while others look warmer. Place your buttons against the fabric in daylight before sewing them on, particularly if you want a close match.

Texture matters too. A smooth button can provide contrast against a fluffy knit, while a matt finish may suit a plain wool jacket. On textured fabric, try a simpler design and see how the two look together.

Colours to pair with black buttons

Black works with far more than black fabric. Here are a few combinations to try:

  • Cream and oatmeal: a clear contrast on cardigans, jackets and waistcoats.
  • Grey: try black buttons against anything from pale silver to charcoal.
  • Red and burgundy: a darker finishing detail for knitwear and coats.
  • Purple: an option for plum, violet and aubergine fabrics.
  • Black-and-white prints: pick up the black in the pattern to bring the design together.

Lay a few buttons along your fabric rather than judging from just one. Seeing them spaced as they will be on the finished garment can make the decision much easier.

Choosing the size and finish

Measure your existing buttons if you’re replacing them, and check that the new ones pass comfortably through the buttonholes.

For a new project, follow the pattern’s size recommendation as your starting point. Consider the weight of the button as well, especially on fine knitwear.

A polished finish can add contrast to matt fabric, while a textured button can bring detail to a plain garment. There’s no need to choose the same finish for every project—try a few and see which feels right.
